Ahmed ALOM

Cuban pianist, composer and improviser, Ahmed Alom, (Gasp-inducing brilliance, splendid — The Washington Post) has become one of the leading young figures in piano performance in the United States. His musicality and versatility among contrasting styles of music, visionary interpretations and unique improvisation talent, have garnered him critical acclaim and rising popularity among the young piano virtuosos on today's scene.

Besides winning the First Prize at the XXI Xalapa Piano Competition and the National Chamber Music Competition, (Mexico), the Maria Clara Cullell International Piano Competition (Costa Rica) and the UNEAC Piano Competition in Havana, Alom also won prizes at the Yamaha sponsored Cuevas International Piano Competition, (Mexico), the Bradshaw, Buono and the Slatkin/Composers Competitions at Manhattan School of Music, (New York). He was also finalist at the 66th Chopin Kosciuszko Foundation Competition, recipient of the Munz Foundation Competition, and 1st Prize laureate  of the Young Musicians Competition. 

Ahmed Alom started piano lessons at 5  in his hometown Havana, with Beatriz Olivera, Hortensia Upmann, Leonardo Gell, Ninowska Fernandez and Svetlana Logounova. He is a Manhattan School of Music graduate as a scholarship student of the Viola B. Marcus Foundation and Flavio Varani Fund for Pianists, under the guidance of Dr. Solomon Mikowsky, and was coached by Kirill Gerstein, Sylvia Rosenberg, Richard Goode, Anthony de Mare and Robert Levin. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Spain, Cuba, Mexico and the United States, performing works ranging from Beethoven to Chopin and Gershwin. As a Jazz and Latin Jazz pianist, he has appeared in festivals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica and Cuba, and he has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the MSM Afro Cuban Jazz Band, ExitZero Jazz Festival and Jazz Night in America.

Alom collaborated with the LatinGrammy Award Winner Pedro Giraudo, and the music ensemble for the newly premiered ballet “Doña Peron”, written by composer Peter Salem and commissioned by Ballet Hispanico. He  also collaborates regularly with Philippe Quint, Steve Hackman, Teddy Abrams, Paquito D’Rivera (Grammy Winner), Pedrito Martinez, among others. 

Among his current projects, Alom is scheduled to perform “No Man’s Land”,  a recital featuring virtuoso violinist Ruben Rengel, directed and curated by Jaime Laredo, at the Linton Chamber Music Festival, including works by Poulenc, Kapustin and traditional folk Latin American Music. In 2023 he was also part of the premiere of “Tentacion”, a Cuban timba style concerto for 8-piece band and orchestra, in collaboration with People of Earth collective, Musical America’s conductor of the year Teddy Abrams, and MacArthur fellow Dafnis Prieto. The work was presented with the Louisville Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony Orchestra, L.A Philharmonic and Britt Festival Orchestra. 

In January of 2023, Alom announced the release of his first studio album Exilio. The project is curated and published by Brooklyn record label Irreverence Group Music (IGM) and includes works by Luis A. Calvo, Ignacio Cervantes, Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz and Julián De La Chica. Acclaimed American pianist Simone Dinnerstein said: "The album... is performed with great sensitivity and compassion... his nuanced sense of touch bring out the humanity and elegance of this music, which deserves to become part of the canon", while celebrated Australian pianist Lisa Moore said: "The album... is performed with elegant phrasing, sumptuous sound, and deep commitment. [Alom] is a wonderful pianist, and his generous focus on composers in exile shines a beacon of light on the plight and struggles of our humanity." The album will be release on June 2 of 2023.
